Accessibility statement
This statement covers the website calenu.app and is based on our own assessment. We want everyone to be able to use the site. Here is what we have done for that, what is still missing, and how to tell us about a barrier.
What works
- Language. Every page is marked with its language, English or German, so screen readers read it correctly.
- Keyboard. The keyboard focus is visible on every page, as a blue outline.
- Bubbles. The specialties and some terms open a bubble with an explanation. Enter opens it, Tab moves into it, and Escape closes it and takes you back.
- Skip to content. Every page starts with a “Skip to content” link. It appears as soon as the keyboard reaches it and jumps past the navigation.
- Less motion. If you turned on “Reduce motion” on your device, the website stands still. Content then appears without animation. Where the page confirms something, a single sign fades in and out in place.
- Images. The pictures of the app have text alternatives, and a screen reader reads only the picture on show. Purely decorative graphics are hidden from screen readers.
- Film. The short animated film on the home page plays only when you start it, with a button the keyboard can reach too. It has no sound. Its subtitles are on in the language of the page, the other language can be chosen, and “The story” tells it as text.
- Stop. On the home page the light behind the page breathes and Calu blinks; the band under the headline and the fine points of light in the background move only while you scroll. Where the page confirms something, small medical signs such as a cross, a tooth or a heart float up for a moment. “Stop” under the phone holds all of it still, and “Play” starts it again. The app’s screens change only as you scroll. In a narrow window the phone stays at the top as you scroll, and whatever the keyboard reaches moves into view below it. In a short window the phone scrolls with the page.
- Cards with more to say. The cards on the home page and on “For practices” turn over to show more, with a click on the card or with the “More” button, which the keyboard reaches too. “Back” or Escape turns them back. With “Reduce motion” the card cross-fades instead of turning.
- Contrast. The text colors are the app’s. On the light surfaces they reach at least 4.5 to 1.
- Emergency numbers. Where the website gives 112 and 116117, they are text, not images.
What is not done yet
- We have not measured the contrast over gradients and images on every page.

Legal framework
Microenterprises that provide services are exempt from the duties of the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz, Germany’s accessibility act. These are companies with fewer than ten employees and an annual turnover or balance sheet total of no more than two million euros. Calenu is such a company today. We still build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
